Today, April 5th, 2022, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) joined over 90 House Republicans, led by Rep. Tom Emmer (MN-06), in a letter to the Biden Administration urging action on rising fertilizer prices.
“Supply-chain issues and rising costs have hurt farmers around the country and Iowans have been no exception. Just last month, fertilizer prices reached the highest recorded point and there is no end in sight,” said Miller-Meeks. “I have spoken to producers across the Second District about how these costs are hurting their bottom line and how they cannot afford today’s prices. The Administration should take every action available to help our farmers. If they do not act, Congress should.”
Background:
Fertilizer prices rose significantly throughout March of this year. Diammonium phosphate (DAP), the world’s most commonly used fertilizer, reached its highest price on record last week, up 16% from the previous month. The price of urea rose 10% in the same period.
Prices have been further impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with sanctions bringing Russian fertilizer imports to a standstill. Russia is consistently among the world’s leading exporters of fertilizer, with a trading volume of nearly $9 billion annually.
