Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today commemorated Saturday’s Constitution Day, marking the 235th anniversary of the formal signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The holiday has been variously known as “Constitution Day,” “Citizenship Day” and, since 2004, as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.”

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Our Constitution establishes a system of government that balances power and protects freedom and individual rights. Yet, our Constitution and the participatory democracy and peaceful transfer of power it establishes is under attack.  On issues from voting to reproductive rights to holding insurrectionists to account, we have seen power-hungry, anti-democratic forces strip Americans of their rights and delegitimize our institutions. On this year’s Constitution Day, we must rededicate ourselves to strengthening our democracy and assuring equal justice under the law. I believe our Constitution will prove resilient because the American values it stands for -- liberty, justice, and self-determination -- are universal.

“I'm proud that my duties as Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties allow me to work daily to protect the sacred rights enshrined in our nation's founding charter. Constitution day reminds us of our cherished liberties as we strive to form a more perfect union.”
