Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s special representative for political prisoners, today condemned the Iranian response to protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in custody after being arrested by Iran’s Morality Police for allegedly violating strict hijab rules.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“The death in police custody of Mahsa Amini has sparked outrage and protests across Iran. The hijab mandate dating from 1981 is widely flouted and its enforcement by the Morality Police is random, oppressive and unjust. I support the Biden Administration’s decision to sanction the police force for its role in Amini’s death. The police crackdown on women protesting Amini’s death and the hijab law must end, and a serious re-thinking of the hijab law must be on the agenda.”
