MOORESTOWN, NJ — Local business owner and candidate for Congress Bob Healey released a statement today denouncing Kim’s radical, dangerous view on national defense.
“Congressman Kim is an active member of the radical House Progressive Caucus which has proposed a 10% cut in defense spending. This group of Democrats — the House’s most hardcore left members – proposed an amendment (Pocan-Lee-Jayapal) which would cut the Pentagon budget by 10 percent.”
“Representing this district and serving on the House Armed Services Committee, Andy Kim should know better. Unfortunately, every chance he gets he votes with the most left wing Democrats in Congress,” Healey added.
“Despite claiming to ‘work for the people’ of the Third District, Andy Kim’s radical view on defense spending would likely put our people out of work,” Healey noted.
Former Congressman Jim Saxton, joined Healey in suggesting, “Any member of Congress calling for a 10% cut in the defense budget is simply acting irresponsibly. Such a deep cut would negatively impact the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. It’s just a very bad idea.”
“Only an ivory tower, leftwing ideologue like Andy Kim could fail to appreciate what kind of economic impact $4.8 billion has on the surrounding economy. Andy Kim’s view is not only misinformed, but if adopted would have a real life impact on the more than 52,000 airmen, soldiers, sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians and their family members who live and work on or around the JBMDL,” Healey said.
“If Congressman Kim really cared about representing the people of this district, he would publicly retract his support for a 10% cut in defense spending,” concluded the Burlington County Republican candidate.
Congressman Saxton, a Mount Holly resident, was the Congressional representative of the Third Congressional District, from 1993-2009. Congressman Saxton was widely praised across South Jersey for his efforts to remove Fort Dix from the Pentagon’s base realignment and closure lists in 1989 and 1991, McGuire Air Force Base from the list in 1993, and Lakehurst Naval Air Station from the list in 1995. From 1993 to 2005, he worked to foster joint military facilities at the three installations. Saxon’s efforts were rewarded when Congress passed and President Bush signed into law the Base Realignment and Closure, 2005, which permitted the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to be formed. 1
