MOORESTOWN, NJ — Local business owner and candidate for Congress Bob Healey today said he strongly favors educational choice for all children and, at the federal level, as a Member of Congress he would support innovative teaching options and programs.
Healey blasted “limousine liberals like Phil Murphy and far-left radicals like Andy Kim who claim they care about equal educational opportunity for all regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background, but when push comes to shove, they cower and genuflect to the NJEA and their powerful union bosses who will fight school choice at every turn,” said Healey. “That New Jersey’s public schools are more segregated than those in Alabama or Mississippi is a disgrace, and it’s largely because Democrats who control state government refuse to do anything about it.”
Healey challenged his opponent, Rep. Andy Kim, to stand up to the powerful teacher’s union and put parents and children first.
The Republican candidate for Congress in NJ-03 District said, “Every child deserves a quality education that provides the knowledge and skills needed to them for a successful career and fulfilling life. We need to expand access for the poor, not just the privileged. No child and no parent should be locked into a failing school system simply because of the zip code on their mailing address. I’ve seen the difference educational choice can make in a child’s life first hand, particularly those in low-income communities, through our work in inner city Catholic Schools in my Family’s foundation.”
Healey noted that House Republican lawmakers recently introduced twin bills in Congress that would establish a federal school choice program by enacting a $10 billion tax credit program to fund education scholarships.
“America’s greatness is due in large part to vigorous competition that spurs innovation. I‘ve never understood the opposition to applying this value to our educational system – where arguably society’s most important work is undertaken teaching the next generation,” concluded Healey, a lifelong New Jerseyan.
The Moorestown homeowner noted that last year in neighboring Pennsylvania, the state “…approved the largest expansion of the [its] Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program in its 20-year history. An additional $40 million in spending will allow for approximately 13,000 more students to participate in the program. According to our ABCs of School Choice, approximately 46,000 low- and middle-income students currently participate in the program, receiving scholarships averaging $1,990 from one of 258 scholarship organizations across the state.”
