Odds of Trump law enforcement foes Comey and McCabe being audited in special program 1-in-950,000,000

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, today reiterated his calls for IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig be fired in the wake of revelations that, against all odds, both former FBI Director James Comey and former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe received extensive IRS audits.

“If you think the audit of Donald Trump’s purported enemies was a random act of God then I have a bridge in North Jersey I’d like to sell you,” said Chairman Pascrell. “There may be no group on the face of this earth that deserves the benefit of the doubt less than Donald Trump and his government enablers. The IRS under Donald Trump’s handpicked commissioner Charles Rettig has been one catastrophe after another. The auditing of two law enforcement leaders at Trump’s behest is a titanic scandal. An investigation by TIGTA is warranted but should not delay what we is plain to see. Charles Rettig has wrecked public trust in the IRS and I reiterate my calls for President Biden to fire Mr. Rettig immediately. If Mr. Rettig cared at all about this agency he would hand in his resignation today. And if he doesn’t go Mr. Rettig should be impeached.”

On May 13, 2022, Pascrell became the first member of Congress to demand Rettig’s dismissal.

As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight, Rep. Pascrell has been focused on fixing the IRS. On October 26, 2021, Pascrell demanded answers from Commissioner Rettig on systemic mail delays impacting IRS operations, tax filings, and refunds. Pascrell raised alarms on the slow start to the 2021 tax-filing season, and with Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA-01) castigated the IRS’s continually sending out erroneous notices to taxpayers.
