Iowa

United States Senate candidate Michael Franken continues to ramp up his campaign for the general election, announcing today that C.J. Petersen will join the campaign as Communications Director. A new poll conducted by the Des Moines Register/Mediacom shows Franken within striking distance of Senator Chuck Grassley.

“Iowa’s next Senator will be chosen outside of the cities and suburbs,” said Petersen, who previously worked with RuralOrganizing.org and in rural economic development. “Admiral Franken doesn’t have to role-play rural values, because the struggles his family faced growing up in Sioux County shaped who he is.” Petersen, an Iowa native who lives in rural Audubon County with his husband, Luke, was elected in June to lead the Iowa Democratic Party’s Stonewall Caucus.

“We are extremely pleased to have C.J. join our team,” said Campaign Manager Julie Stauch. “C.J. brings an out-of-the-box perspective to our campaign, with his focus and expertise in rural issues. C.J.’s perspective as a gay man living in rural western Iowa is invaluable. Mike Franken will be a Senator for all Iowans, and that’s why Chuck Grassley is in the fight of his political life.”
