Washington, D.C. — Today, the House passed H.R. 8373, the Right to Contraception Act, which will federally protect the right for Americans nationwide to access contraception. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a precedent has been set for the same Court to next overturn Griswold v. Connecticut, a 1965 landmark decision which protects the freedom to use contraceptives without government interference.

“Birth control is health care — plain and simple — and it is a critical component to women’s health and equity. We have seen just how far this Court of unelected, extremist judges will go to infringe on our constitutionally protected rights, most recently with the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, rolling back decades of abortion protections,” said Rep. Judy Chu. “This decision sets a dangerous precedent to justify overturning other critical protections, such as access to contraception. Family planning should be left to families, not politicians. I was proud to vote in favor of the Right to Contraception Act which will create a federal right for providers to provide, and patients to receive, the birth control method that works best for them”
