LOUISVILLE – Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) announced a federal investment of $1,000,000 to go toward the rehabilitation of Louisville’s sidewalks. Yarmuth secured the funding through the House Appropriations Committee’s Community Project Funding program. It was one of 10 local projects the Congressman sought and secured funding for in the FY2022 omnibus bill.

This investment will assist the city with its ongoing sidewalk rehabilitation work, removing barriers to accessibility and enhancing pedestrian safety in neighborhoods across Louisville.

“Louisvillians deserve safety and peace of mind on our city’s sidewalks, whether they’re walking to work, taking their children or grandchildren to school, or just stepping out for fresh air or exercise,” said Yarmuth. “By targeting projects in the neighborhoods that need it most, we can protect families and increase accessibility by ensuring level sidewalks and safer pedestrian crossings. I’m proud to be able to support Metro Government’s work with this federal investment that will benefit Louisville families for years to come.”

Yarmuth made the announcement at the site of a sidewalk repair project being completed on Algonquin Parkway. He was joined by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Metro Councilwoman Angela Bowens, and Metro Public Works Director Vanessa Burns.

“Sidewalk rehabilitation projects are foundational to a city that puts a premium on the safe passage of its residents and over the past 12 years, our hard-working Public Works team has laid 350,000 feet of ADA-compliant sidewalks,” said Fischer. “Thank you to our partner in Washington, D.C., Congressman John Yarmuth, for championing our efforts to make Louisville more accessible to all our residents. Thanks also to our Public Works team for their absolute dedication to keeping our sidewalks, roads, and bike and scooter lanes safe and in good condition, no matter the weather.”

Director Burns highlighted the importance of working together at all levels of government to deliver services to Louisvillians.

“I want thank Congressman Yarmuth and Mayor Fischer for their commitment to revitalizing our city’s infrastructure during their tenures,” said Burns. “Their support of Public Works has been vital in creating a long-standing partnership with the Metro Council and other stakeholders, which has allowed our Public Works team to deliver critical infrastructural services to our city.”
