Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), Chair of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, announced today that her longtime chief of staff, Bill Harper, will end his congressional service on January 6, 2023. Harper began serving as chief of staff on January 3, 2001, Rep. McCollum’s first day in Congress.
Congresswoman McCollum released the following statement:
“Bill Harper is the consummate professional,” Rep. McCollum said. “He has dedicated his life to public service, and for the past 22 years Bill has been responsible for building and leading this congressional office. Harper’s skills, vision, and leadership have helped shape everything my office has accomplished during these two decades, particularly my work on the Appropriations Committee.
“Bill has always prioritized the people we serve, focusing on making a positive impact for Minnesota families, communities, and businesses. Bill’s efforts also made a remarkable difference in people’s lives across the country and around the world – people we’ll never know. That is the essence of Bill’s public service. In the future, I know Bill will continue to make important contributions to Minnesota and our nation.”
Prior to serving in Congress, Harper managed McCollum’s historic 2000 election victory when she became just the second woman elected to Congress in Minnesota history. Harper served five years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala and Malawi. Early in Harper’s career, he served as Chief of Staff to former Hennepin County Board Chair Mark Andrew, and as a personal assistant to former Minnesota Attorney General Hubert H. Humphrey, III.
Harper will remain a political advisor to Rep. McCollum.
